Things I've learnt this week

The application to further your studies is a schlep, a pain, and more expensive than you thought. In fact it's probably harder to do than the actual course itself. I'm trying to track down my university transcripts. It cost me R1 155 and what they've promised will be two weeks to get two years' worth of transcripts from one of the universities I attended. It cost me nothing and less than 24 hours to get another two years' worth of transcripts from another university. I have no idea why the difference in price and time. But that's just step one. I still have mountain loads of other information I need to gather. Did I mention the 100 page prospectus on how to actually apply and what the requirements are?

There is no hope for the English language. The work I'm doing has made me realise that people are terrible at communicating and the written word is not as simple to grasp as I think. People are lazy. Everything needs to be double checked. Names are tricky and you know the world is doomed when politicians spell their own names wrong.

I read an article this week quoting a renowned South African editor. Throughout the interview he answered questions with "ja" instead of "yes". I know, it's an Afrikaans word that has been adopted by South Africans and is really just how we speak (even I say it), but it just sounded so casual and flippant that I couldn't concentrate on the rest of the interview.

I am a klutz. I've managed to pull a muscle in my neck and shoulders by... wait for it... being unconscious. Yip, I went to bed all fine and dandy and woke up with my neck in spasm and unable to look left without wincing in pain. How I've managed to do this WHILE UNCONSCIOUS, I will never know.

So that's my little rant for today. Good thing I have a personal blog to post to and blow off steam. Excuse me now, I'm off to find a painkiller, or ten.
